Beyond The Walls
Speaking Up for Affordable Housing
Affordable housing is a challenge in the Stevens Point area. And Beloved Community is committed to searching for solutions.

If you want to advocate for affordable housing, strategies to support that include:
-
Allowing a range of housing types in residential areas (townhome, twinhome, multi-unit, etc.)
-
Reducing the current minimum square footage for a single-family dwelling (current requirements are 1,200 square feet in R-1 and 900 square feet in other zoning districts)
-
Allowing smaller residential lot sizes and specifically reduced lot width (zero-lot-line)
-
Reducing parking and setback requirements
-
Allowing greater height and density of housing units
-
Continuing to allow and possibly expand options for ADUs (accessory dwelling units; sometimes called “granny flats” or carriage houses)
Members of the Affordable Housing Ministry are alerted via email and bulletins of upcoming city and county action and advocacy opportunities, including:
-
Advocacy efforts to increase the variability and density of approved housing units through zoning code revisions
-
Advocating at city and county administrative meetings for income-adjusted housing units
-
Advocating in support of community efforts to establish year-round emergency housing for our unhoused neighbors.

Members also work directly with other local church groups to present public educational opportunities on issues related to affordable housing, eviction and local efforts to help our unhoused neighbors.
