The Church Year

The Church Year begins with Advent

Advent are the four weeks before Christmas. The word Advent means "coming," as we prepare and look toward the coming of Christ into our hearts and into the world.

Colors of the Season: Blue and Purple; third week is Rose/Pink

Next we have Christmas

Christmas is 12 days long and begins with Christmas Eve (after Sunday) which, in the tradition of our ancestors, was the start of the new day. So Dec. 25-Jan. 5 are the 12 days of Christmas. Epiphany (the coming of the Three Magi/three kings) is Jan. 6 and is its own separate holy-day/holiday. And then it begins a new season.

Colors of the Season: White with Gold

Season after Epiphany

This season begins with Epiphany, and then the color of the season changes to green, for it is a growing season as we hear stories of revelations of Jesus  and the revelations of God who is Love into the world. This season lasts until Lent begins. Since Easter is a "moving" holiday (based on the spring equinox), the start of Lent is also a moving date. Lent is 40 days before Easter, but Sundays (since they are Feast days) do not count in the 40.

Lent

Lent is a season of re-turning toward God's ways of Love. The word for re-turning is "repentance." So this is a season of reflection and action to first discern where and when we are missing the mark of Love and then, how can we reorient our lives, our hearts and minds, with Love's ways.

During Lent, Beloved Community offers midweek Evensong services at 6:30 p.m. preceded by a soup-and-bread supper at 5:30 p.m. We usually have other special Lenten offerings as well. The final week of Lent is Holy Week, beginning with Jesus' entrance into Jerusalem (Palm Sunday) and his final week and gatherings with his followers, friends, and family. These include Maundy Thursday (the Last Supper) and Good Friday (Jesus' sacrificial giving of his life), leading to Easter.

Colors of the Season: Purple and Holy Week in Red

Easter

The season of new life – when we live into the truth that Love can pulls us from our tombs and bring about renewal and new life – realignment (a/k/a, at-one-ment) with Love's ways. This season lasts 50 days and ends on Pentecost (literally 50 days after Easter Sunday).

Colors of the Season: White with Gold

Pentecost brings us to the season after Pentecost

This is the longest season of the year; the first Sunday after Pentecost is always Trinity Sunday. This is another season of growing and hearing stories of the early church and the life and miracles of Jesus. This spans all throughout the summer season and into early Fall. The last Sunday of October we remember Reformation Sunday (when the Protestant Church began) and the first Sunday in November we celebrate the Feast Day of All Saints, when we remember all those who have helped us, and the Church, to live into Love.

Color of the Season: Green. Pentecost Sunday is Red; Trinity and All Saints is White with Gold
